Bivalent Systems

A bivalent system utilises two energy sources and is becoming increasingly common for low carbon heating systems.

 

Controllability and effective control of bivalent systems is far more difficult than systems with one heat source. This is due to a number of reasons including:

 

  • Speed of response of plant – particularly with biomass systems
  • Minimum and maximum plant inlet and outlet temperatures
  • Plant differential temperatures and associated flow rates
  • Thermal storage to increase plant untilsation
  • Thermal storage to increase system capacity and response to peak loads
  • Metering requirements
  • Packaged plant controls and integration with the overall system operation
